February- 2009

To All of our Friends,

We hope this edition finds you doing well. Please enjoy the latest edition of our newsletter. We try to get out our "news" at least once a month, but sometimes other responsibilities keep us from doing so. Included below is an article, some before and after photos of a project we just completed, as well as a "to do list" for February and March. Please let us know if we can help you in any way.

SPRING IS COMING!!

What a beautiful week we are having. Weather like this makes me excited about the upcoming spring season. Winters are always slow in our industry for some reason or another. I can only assume that outdoor projects are not on one's mind when it is cold and dreary outside. During the winter months, we take time to participate in educational courses and training seminars on the latest trends in our industry. This is also an ideal time for you to prepare your landscape for the spring green up before it is too warm. Spring beauty is like clock work when Valentine's day arrives. Soon after that day, a warm up occurs in the weather and the Cherry trees and Daffodils begin to show their beautiful colors. When this occurs, our phone will ring off the hook! Work will soon stack up for those wishing to have their landscapes cared for or projects completed for their spring enjoyment. If you are planning spring work, now is the time to call before the rush.

The talk of everyone these days, especially the "media", is the economy. The economy is tough - but not dead. The home improvement industry is recognizing the trend of creating 'Staycations.' The trend is that homeowners are investing in and creating beautiful spaces at their residences for their continuous enjoyment. In my 20+ years in this profession, I have seen the economy dip and roll a few times and renovation projects continue. People enjoy their homes and appreciate a beautiful, relaxing retreat of their own to enjoy and escape to. If you or your friends and family are planning such improvements, now is probably the best opportunity to take on such projects. It is also very important to maintain the landscapes we have and the structures we enjoy. A Maintenance Service goes a long way when it comes to maintaining the appearance of our properties.

The winter months are the best for designing your outdoor spaces and planning the calendar to install and/or maintain your beautiful space before the weather warms up. Landscape planting should be done during this window of opportunity. We generally will shy away from major planting projects after March 15. The reason we do so is driven by the needs of the plants themselves. Warm weather can arrive in our area by late April and for sure by May so we want your plants to be well on their way to being established before the heat and dryness of our climate arrives.

February is the month for pruning and spring clean ups as well as preventing dreaded weed infestations in your lawn and landscape. I always plan pruning around Valentine's day with the exception of spring and early summer blooming plants. Prune them too early and you may have a warm up period that produces new growth that will be frost bitten. Pruning at the wrong time can also remove the flower buds that will produce the blooms in the spring.

One of the best opportunities that exist during this month is evaluating some of your outdoor entertaining areas. Does the deck need replacing or refinishing? How about the patio to entertain during the beautiful spring weather? If you desire to maintain these elements or need to address an aging structure, now is the time. Give us a call today for any of your out door needs. Please also visit us at

Recent Project!!

The project below was driven by several factors. The client desired a series of spaces all interlinked with style and gardens. She wanted a nice entry to the back of her home from the drive way. We created a grand stone masonry staircase that will support a future roof structure with architectural columns and a garden room with a water feature. Another aspect was that she wanted to make use of the space at the back of the master bed room. This space would also transition into two spaces in the back landscape. We designed and created a beautiful stone terrace level that is now accessed through new french doors that were installed at the master bedroom. The area is also accessed from the screen porch in which we simply modified the existing porch to add a Phantom screen door. The lower patio is for grilling, dining and possibly a future hot tub. The entry area links to the entertaining area along a new path flanked by gardens. There is a lawn space that allows for play space for the kids off of the patio and an alternative access gate and fence. New plantings surround the space that will provide screening and color. Elements used in the project matched the home's architectural elements such as stone masonry and wrought iron railings.
